March 9 (Bloomberg) — The District of Columbia followed by Vermont, Alaska, New York and Massachusetts were the top per- capita winners of federal funds tied to census data in fiscal year 2008, a report shows.

Seasonal flu yet to come: Officials encourage precautions (Peninsula Clarion)

The death on Feb. 10 of Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies Director Terry Shepherd from complications of the H1N1 flu does not show a resurgence of the pandemic that first hit Alaska and Homer last June. Shepherd, 45, died at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

State Virology Lab confirms Shepherd had H1N1 (Homer News)

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services confirmed today that a middle-aged woman from Homer who died Wednesday tested positive for H1N1 influenza. A swab test was done yesterday by the Alaska State Virology Lab, Fairbanks.

Recently, scientists obtained and sequenced the 1918 H1N1 strain from a frozen corpse found in Alaska. … Most human deaths due to bird flu have occurred in Indonesia….The 1918-1919 H1N1 type influenza pandemic killed an estimated 20-50 million persons, with 549,000 deaths in the United States alone….As of early June 2009, H1N1 influenza had infected 28,774 people in 74 countries, and 144 deaths were confirmed to have been caused by the disease….If suspected H1N1 flu occurs, isolation is recommended for infected individuals and household contacts. … The CDC estimates that influenza is responsible for an average of more than 20,000 deaths annually….
